The islanders’ traditional way of life is connected to the sea (fishing, navigation, ship building) and agriculture and livestock farming, especially sheep breeding, and this, along with other more modern activities, remained on the island until today.
The island of Krk’s life in the past and in the present can be followed through the symbolic number seven. It was inhabited by the Croatian people in the 7th century, the seventh Frankopan prince was the last prince of Krk, it successfully survived pirate attacks seven times.

Today the island has seven administrative units: The island of Krk and the municipalities: Omišalj, Malinska, Punat, Baška, Vrbnik and Dobrinj.
There are seven different Chakavian dialects of the Croatian language. There are seven different types of customs, dances and popular costumes.

The folk instrument, the sopile is an ancient wind instrument which even today is an integral part of all island festivities, often connected to ecclesiastical holidays and patron saint’s of specific villages.
The richness of the island’s folklore is represented at the summer Festival of Krk folklore every year and at the Festival of Krk’s sopile players.
The tradition also includes carollers during the Carnival period.

Maritime Heritage Interpretation Centre of the Island of Krk

Located in the heart of the Krk’s historic old town, the Maritime Heritage Interpretation Centre offers a fascinating insight into the island’s rich maritime history. The centre includes a model ship workshop and a museum exhibition space that takes visitors on a journey through the centuries—from Late Antiquity and important underwater archaeological sites, through the medieval development of seafaring on the island and the advent of steam navigation, right up to the mid-20th century.
A must-visit for all sea, ship, and history enthusiasts.

Interpretation Centre Krk – Along the Frankopan Routes

Set within the impressive Krk Castle, this Interpretation Centre brings to life the story of one of Croatia’s most prominent noble families – the Frankopans. This remarkable complex, combining military, civic, economic and residential functions, was originally built to defend the town and provide refuge for the local population. Its square tower, the oldest part of the castle, once served as both the cathedral’s bell tower and a courtroom.
The interpretation centre is free to visit, while entry to the wider castle complex is subject to an admission fee.

DUBoak – Maritime Heritage Interpretation Centre, Malinska

DUBoak is a modern interpretation centre that celebrates the maritime traditions of the island and the unique bond between its people, the sea, and the surrounding forest. The exhibition revolves around two central elements — oak (dub) and the sea — symbolising the strength of local identity and the deep connection between nature and the islanders. Through multimedia, interactive displays, and captivating storytelling, DUBoak brings the maritime heritage of Malinska-Dubašnica vividly to life.

“Stari toš” – Olive-Growing Interpretation Centre, Punat

Nestled in the very heart of Punat, Stari Toš is an interpretation centre that bears witness to the rich tradition of olive growing on the island of Krk. Housed within a former olive mill, the centre showcases traditional methods of olive processing using stone mills known as toš. Visitors can explore the entire process of olive oil production and discover the historical significance of the olive in island life through the centuries.
A perfect stop for lovers of olive oil and island heritage.

Baćin Dvor – Guardian of Vrbnik’s Heritage

Located in the heart of picturesque Vrbnik, Baćin Dvor offers a unique insight into the rich cultural heritage of the island of Krk. This authentic space invites visitors to explore a stunning collection of traditional folk costumes, discover local customs, and learn about the traditions preserved through generations.
A highlight is the legacy of the Brotherhood of St. John the Baptist – known as Kapari – which has been active for over 700 years, reflecting the community’s deep-rooted faith and unity.
Baćin Dvor also celebrates the heritage of Glagolitic script – the ancient Slavic alphabet deeply intertwined with Vrbnik’s identity. Through original exhibits, manuscripts, and expert interpretation, visitors can experience the depth of the region’s linguistic and literary tradition.
