The island of Krk, legend and reality

Among the 1185 islands in Croatia, one is golden, Insula Aurea – the island of Krk. Located in the center of the Kvarner Bay, it is recognized as one of the most attractive tourist destinations. The mild Mediterranean climate, favorable geographical location and diversity of natural and cultural beauties, gave it the name “golden island” in antiquity. Its cultural heritage earned it another name – the cradle of Croatian culture, and at the beginning of the twentieth century it was also called the “sixth continent”.

The 45th parallel passes through the island, its longest part is 38, and its widest about 20 kilometers. The coastline is about 190 km long. The nearest mainland is only about a hundred meters away, where the neighboring islands are Cres, Goli and Rab; it also has several small islands (the largest Plavnik is 17 km long, and the smaller Školjić is only 400 m from the coast); It has an unusually diverse relief, climbing from the northwest to the southeast – from picturesque, gentle coves and bays through fertile fields and dense forests with sub-Mediterranean vegetation, to areas of bare karst and a true mountain landscape. There are three streams and two lakes on Krk.

On the highest mountain peak, Obzovi (570 m), the visitor forgets that he is on an island. There are also several unique phenomena – for example, the flora of Krk contains about 1400 species of terrestrial plants, almost half of the total flora in Croatia. The unique plant “Barbašova lazarkinja” is a world rarity, growing only in the Baška bay.

There are also rarities in the fauna, bird species, for example, range from eagles/vultures to the oriental steppe “vrški tić”. To this whole complex contrast of natural features, one should also add the Mediterranean climate – warm summers and mild winters, the cold land wind from the northeast – the bora and the humid jugo, and the pleasant summer westerly wind – the maestral.

Literally all roads lead to Krk: from the mainland – across the Krk Bridge; from the sea – by ship to the ports or harbors, and by ferry to the Valbiska pier, from the air – by plane to the Rijeka airport near Omišalj.

The island of Krk is only 30 kilometers away from the city of Rijeka – the traffic, business, commercial, university and cultural center of Kvarner. No matter which route you choose, upon arriving on the island of Krk, you will see for yourself that the golden island is characterized by unity in diversity – a combination of the present and the past, modernity and archaism, legend and reality.

Since ancient times, it has been believed that the island of Krk is fatefully connected to the number seven: in the seventh century it was settled by Croats, it successfully defended itself against pirates seven times, the seventh prince Frankopan was the last prince of Krk. Today, the island of Krk has seven centers.
